OpenAI In Trouble

According to a recent lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California, OpenAI, the AI firm responsible for ChatGPT and other products, is accused of transitioning from a non-profit research lab to unlawfully stealing and using millions of users’ private information to train its tools. The 157-page lawsuit alleges that OpenAI acquired “stolen private information, including personally identifiable information,” from hundreds of millions of internet users.

The lawsuit, brought forth by individuals identified by initials, professions, or their interactions with OpenAI’s tools, goes so far as to claim that OpenAI poses a “potentially catastrophic risk to humanity.” The suit accuses OpenAI of prioritising profit over privacy, security, and ethics, alleging that the company secretly harvested vast amounts of personal data from the internet without obtaining permission or notifying the owners.

The stolen information encompasses all inputs into OpenAI’s AI tools, including prompts fed to ChatGPT, user account details, payment information, data from users’ browsers, chat and search data, keystroke data, and more.

Microsoft, an OpenAI partner mentioned in the lawsuit, declined to comment, while OpenAI has yet to respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

The plaintiffs claim that OpenAI rushed its products to market without adequate safeguards, creating potential harm to users. The suit raises concerns about the tools’ immense power, which could lead to risks for humanity and even the ability to replicate users’ voices and likenesses.

The lawsuit demands transparency from OpenAI regarding the data it collects and seeks compensation for the stolen data on which the products rely. Additionally, the plaintiffs are advocating for the option for users to opt out of data collection when using OpenAI’s tools.

Blunder Of Bard

Google’s recently unveiled AI chatbot, Bard, had encountered a rough start when its initial demonstration showcased a factual error. Positioned as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Bard was set to be made more widely accessible in the following weeks. During the demo, a query about the James Webb Space Telescope’s recent discoveries prompted Bard to respond with three bullet points, one of which incorrectly claimed that the telescope had captured “the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.” This assertion drew criticism from notable astronomers, who pointed out that the first exoplanet image was taken in 2004 and not by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Astrophysicist Grant Tremblay acknowledged the impressive capabilities of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard but highlighted their tendency to confidently present erroneous information. These systems rely on vast amounts of text data to identify word patterns, lacking a direct database of verified facts. Consequently, they may unintentionally “hallucinate” and produce false data, leading some experts to dub them as “bullshit generators.”
